What Does Your Response Look Like?
As different messages are preached and then posted to the website for the public to hear, I consider what will be the response to hearing the Word of God preached. Sadly, there is very little response. It is exactly like the scriptures: “Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?” Isaiah 53:1.
When “Get Serious” was preached I was one of the people who was rebuked and I knew it. I was totally exposed as someone who was not serious for God and someone who hung out with people who masquerade as disciples of Christ, but are not. It stopped me dead in my tracks and ran a sword through me.
1 Thessalonians 1:4-5 says, “For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, because our gospel came to you not simply with words, but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and with deep conviction.”
1 Thessalonians 2:13 states, “And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is at work in you who believe.”
I immediately saw that the message was not simply words. It wasn't the words of Trent, a scrawny looking man yelling at me. It was The Bible, the word of God being preached to me. Immediately I was deeply convicted. The message provided me with an enormous amount of indignation for myself and toward my wimpy brothers in the “Church” that I was attending at the time. The message confronted me and called me a pretender--someone who doesn't really care about God. Trent proclaimed that serious men of God preach. I was called out.
In response to being called someone who doesn't care about God and someone who is not serious for God, I stepped up to the plate. I preached my first public message 2 days later right in front of those who believed that I was not serious as well as a whole campus full of people. I confronted the leaders of the “Church” that I was attending at the time and told them to repent from doing things that are not written in the bible. I really didn't know what I was doing at all. I only knew that I heard the word of God. It was true and I will do what it says.
I was labeled “divisive” and “misguided” because of what I had done. I then faithfully endured the burning consequences from God for people who build with wood, hay, and straw. 1 Corinthians 3:12-15. I was completely saturated in the teachings and traditions of man, which the bible says nullifies the word of God. Mark 7:8, 13.
Now, years later, I don't hold to any traditions of men. I live the bible. I am still labeled “divisive” and “misguided.” Actually, these days the terms people use to refer to me are much worse (e.g., “Mad,” “Insane,” “Crazy,” etc.)
The point for me writing all this is to draw your attention to you! What is your response to the word of God being preached? Are you willing to uproot your whole life to get it in line with the bible? What is your response to a rebuke? Are you too prideful to respond with repentance that is marked by a confession of guilt and then followed up by a life that no longer possesses that sin?
What's your life's response to what I am writing? What's your life going to say? What action will you take?
